Red Thread...

There is an ancient Chinese belief which states that there is an invisible red thread that connects each of us to all of the individuals who have been, currently are, and will in the future be important to us in our lives.

This red thread can stretch, twist, and bend… but will never break.

Elf on a Shelf

Jennifer and I were telling Katie about when she was little and used to sit on the shelf in the living room. She didn't have any recollection of it. One of our favorite pictures of her was when she was in Christmas clothes with the one hat she would wear at the time and looked like a little elf on the shelf.

When I was little, I fit on the shelf pretty well!

I tried to reenact, but I don't quite fit as well!

A Kitty Christmas Gift

Katie wanted to get her cats some Christmas gifts, so we headed off to the pet store and found one bag of cat toys that could be shared between the two cats. She couldn't wait until Christmas to give the gifts to the cats, so they received the gift a few days early.

I put the toys on the floor for the cats to explore.

They smelled them for a long time.

Then they found their favorites!

Sugar Cookies

After making the peanut butter cookies, we made sugar cookies for Katie to decorate.

We couldn't find our Christmas cookie cutters, so we just used my princess set.

This year I chose not to use frosting. We just used sprinkles.

I thought both types of cookies turned out perfectly!

Peanut Butter Cookies

We used to always make peanut butter cookies for my dad every Christmas, so it became our own little tradition. Katie doesn't usually eat any of the cookies, but she always likes to help with them.

My favorite part of making cookies is stirring the dry ingredients.

The Cat House

Both cats have really been loving the gingerbread house that Katie got for them.

Mr. Limpet now spends more time in the house than General Washington.

A Sugar Cookie Igloo

Instead of making a gingerbread house this year, Katie got a sugar cookie igloo set. She had lots of fun making it even though her face looks serious in the pictures. We just had to concentrate a lot to keep the thing balanced!

We had to build the structure first.

We realized right away we needed more white frosting than it came with. Luckily we bought an extra can at the store. Then I could add the blue frosting touches.

I added the sprinkles last.

I loved how it turned out!

It was fun to make!

A Card from a Friend

Katie was so excited to get her first Christmas card of the season!

I loved reading the card, but I also loved...

...seeing Kai and his family!

A Craft

One of my students gave me a bookmark that was also a craft. It came with little jewels to put on the bookmark - kind of like a color by number. Katie was very interested in it, so I let her put the beads on it for me.

The bookmark was time consuming but lots of fun!

First Day of Winter Break

We woke up on our first day of Winter Break to a dusting of snow. It wasn't much, but it excited Katie nonetheless!

I love seeing snow!

A Surprise Gift

One of Katie's friends from school dropped an early Christmas gift off for her at the house. It was such a surprise for her!

I was so excited to get some beads for making bracelets!

Trying the Bubbles

It was a cold morning, so Katie decided to take her bubbles outside and see if they did anything different.

I didn't know if the bubbles would freeze or not.

It wasn't cold enough to freeze the bubbles, but they did fall to the ground faster.

Fun & Seasonal Hair

Katie and I had seen a video on how to make a Christmas tree hair style, so we decided to give it a try.

It felt weird to hold a tall pile of hair on top of my head!

My "Christmas tree" was a little straighter before I hit it on something. I still thought it was fun though!

Thinking of Friends

Katie had asked if she could get a small gift for each of her friends at school, so we went shopping. When she got home, she was excited to do all of the wrapping.

Mr. Limpet was my constant companion while I put my gifts together.

A Holiday Dance

Katie had her dance observation week for the holidays. It was another limited audience performance this year, but I was so happy to be able to go see her dance.

A Special Shirt

Since Katie is in the highest grade in her school, her class was given a school shirt that was made only for the 5th graders. She was so happy to get it.

Can you find me? I was hiding a little!

Treats for Teachers

Katie chose to get her teachers caramel covered apples this year for Christmas because it's one of her favorite treats.

I was excited to help put the gift boxes together. I love giving gifts!

The North Pole Village

The thing that Katie had been waiting for is putting up Jennifer's North Pole village with her. It's a lot of work, but it is always so cute in the end.

Aunt Jennifer takes everything out of the box, but she lets me design the North Pole!

When I get done placing the houses where I want them, Aunt Jennifer hooks up all the lights.

After that, we add trees and snow!

I was happy with how it looked in the end!

This is my favorite part of the village!

Guess What Time It Is

We were over at my sister's house, and Katie was excited to do something. What could it be?

I've been asking and asking Aunt Jennifer for this, and the day finally arrived.
(More to come tomorrow.)

A Mythical Creature

In Katie's class, the students created their own mythical creature and they wrote informational papers about it. As they finished with their writing, they got to create their creature in paper mâché. The projects are on display by the library. Katie thought paper mâché proved to be very difficult but still enjoyed the experience.

It's hard to see my creature's face at this angle, but my mythical creature is the Anacothius, and it is like a cat with wings.

A Bookstore

Our friend had told us about a store that was filled with all Japanese items, including the books that Katie loves. While we were in the city, we decided to head there. On the way, we stopped at her other favorite bookstore.

I love bookstores!

In the City

When my mom had an eye appointment, we all went along to spend some time in the city. Katie and I walked to a park where she found a favorite statue.

This sculpture is a replica from the Shang Dynasty.

Helping Out

I was putting together a gift for my students, and I had two helpers to make the process go much faster.

Grandma and I helped put treats together with my mom. We had fun!

A Free Gift

Katie was surprised and happy when we went to the movie that the theater was giving out free movie posters.

I loved my poster!

Wednesday, December 8, 2021

A Special Outing

Katie really wanted to go to the new movie, Encanto. We have not been to the movie theater for the longest time, but when she wanted to go so badly, we went to a late showing of the movie and had so much fun.

There were some other people at the theater too, but we were very spread out.

General

General Washington and Mr. Limpet have behaved themselves a little better around our Christmas tree this year. They haven't crawled up in the middle of it over and over, but we did catch General Washington as he got down from the tree the other night.

The "snow" that General Washington brings out of the tree always gives him away!

Bye, Bingle

We were so sad to say good-bye to our faithful friend, Bingle, last week. Katie has always had Bingle as part of her life since she came home from China. Bingle wasn't a nine-life cat. She was more like a fifteen-life cat, and we were lucky to have her.

Bingle lived a happy 21 years, and we will miss her!

An Advent Calendar

When Nigel the Elf returns for the season, he brings Katie an advent calendar.

This year I got a fidget advent calendar!

Saturday, December 4, 2021

Welcome, December!

With the start of December, Katie's elf and elf pets returned.

My elf pets were found in the new cat house, and Nigel was hanging out on the tree!

The Christmas Tree

Katie was so excited to get our Christmas tree up!

I love going through all of our ornaments and picking my favorites to hang!

A Holiday Cat House

Katie found a gingerbread house for the cats and really wanted to get it. The cats were very curious about it.

General Washington loves the house the most.

He likes to hide in it!
